"A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love." ~ Saint Basil

In the writings of David, Israel's king, in the Book of Psalms, in the first Psalm of 150, Psalm1, insightful and inspired instruction is offered to us concerning good and evil, setting before us, as Moses did, the choice between life and death.   We can choose the blessing or we can choose the curse.  We are encouraged by Moses & David to chose the way of life, to follow the right way, and avoid the path which will certainly end in our misery and ruin.

PSALM 1

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked,
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,

2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.

3 That person is like a tree
planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither,
whatever they do prospers.

.
Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked
will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the Lord watches
over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

As someone who loves to run through the seasons, trees have always held a great interest and deep spiritual fascination for me.  In winter, trees show a particular strength and also a vulnerability as they stand, branches bare of leaves and facing all the great challenges winter might throw at them.   Proudly, quietly and stately the tall trees stand.
.

.
As winter turns to the season of spring, for those who have eyes to see, the naked and vulnerable trees are slowly and beautifully and majestically transformed into great shows of pink and white blooms and blossoms as they don their pretty and exquisite spring dresses.

.

.
As the spring blooms and blossoms fade, the trees put on their summer green dresses.   Green is the colour of renewal, of growth, of hope, of freshness and even fertility, and of life itself.  Green is also said to have healing properties and is understood to be the most restful and relaxing of all the colours for th humn eye to view.  It is also the colour associated with greed, envy and jealousy.  So once again we are faced with choices.  Choose life!

I love Autumn time.  The Season of Fall. It is my most favourite of all the seasons, yet the joy and beauty of the season will give way to winter's biting cold and icy challenges.  As I run during the Autumn, as the trees exchange their green summer dresses for their yellow, brown and red dancing gowns, we know the Season of colour is drawing to its close as the dying leaves dance their final dance carried on the wings of the winds of change.

The mighty and majestic tree pictured above stands proudly just out side the great picture window of the apartment where we lived for a couple of years.  I would watch this tree work its way through the seasons, naked and vulnerable during winter's months; slowly but surely coming to life during warmer spring days, and then one day, somehow it magically happened, it was completely dressed in its summer garment of green.

As the hot days of summer began to become shorter as the daylight diminished, slowly, almost in a way so gradually, I think the word might be imperceptibly, green turned to red, almost fire-engine red, until the whole mighty tree was one great ball of fire, announcing loudly to the world that summer's over, fall is here, and be warned that winter is on its way!
