"Clouds come floating into my life,
no longer to carry rain or usher storm,
but to add colour to my sunset sky."
~ Rabindranath Tagore ~
"Feelings aroused by the touch of someone's hand, the sound of music,
the smell of a flower, a beautiful sunset, a work of art, love, laughter, hope
and faith - all work on both the unconscious and the conscious aspects
of the self, and they have physiological consequences as well."
~ Bernie Siegel ~
I can picture him, over 3,000 years ago, sitting perhaps on a hillside, tending his father's sheep. The sun is setting, and the clouds are slowly making their way across the evening's blue sky. As Bernie Siegel observes, a sunset can touch us on many levels, and for this young shepherd, it causes him to offer praise and thanksgiving to the God he worships.
The young shepherd, would one day become Isreal's greatest king, but on this day, 3,000 years ago he is moved by the glorious setting of the sun, and as he prepares for the watch through the darkness and dangers of the oncoming night, he offers his prayer that begins with praise, and those words are captures in the 19th Psalm that is filled with his wisdom, praise and renewal of trust and faith in his God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
