.
John Newton, who wrote the world's most well known and beloved hymn "Amazing Grace" in this perhaps his most devotional and contemplative hymn, “How Sweet The Name of Jesus Sounds In a Believer’s Ear” reminds us in the six stanzas of his hymn ten onderful Biblical titles for Jesus, and they are: Shepherd, Brother, Friend, Prophet, Priest, King, Lord, Life, Way and End.

JESUS IS THE GOOD SHEPHERD
We all know that Jesus is the Good Shepherd bringing to mind
The Twenty Third Psalm, “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
He makes me lie down in green pastures
and leadeth me beside still waters,
he restores my soul.

HOW SWEET THE NAME OF JESUS SOUNDS
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.
.
It makes the wounded spirit whole
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

Dear Name! the Rock on which I build,
My Shield and Hiding Place,
My never-failing Treas’ry filled
With boundless stores of grace!
.
Jesus! my Shepherd, Brother, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King;
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.

Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll praise Thee as I ought.
.
Till then I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath,
And may the music of Thy name
Refresh my soul in death.

JESUS IS OUR BROTHER AND OUR SAVIOUR
The Book of Hebrews reminds us that Jesus is Both the one who makes people holy
and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to
call them brothers and sisters. Jesus is both our Brother and our Saviour.

JESUS CHOSE US AND CALLS US FRIENDS
In John’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “I have called you friends,
for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you may go and bear fruit."

JESUS IS OUR PROPHET, PRIEST AND KING
Again, in Hebrews, we are told that Jesus is Prophet, Priest and King, In the past God spoke
to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,  but in these
last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things,
and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s
glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
After he provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

JESUS CHRIST IS LORD
In St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, he writes: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  No-one can say Jesus is Lord without the power of the Holy Spirit.

JESUS IS THE LIFE AND THE WAY
Two well-known passages of Scripture from John’s Gospel,
and Jesus said, “I am the Way, The Truth and The Life,” and
also “I am Resurrection and Life whosoever believes in me,
though they die, they shall live."  The promise of eternal life.

JESUS IS OUR END

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,
“who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Jesus is the beginning and the end.   The Alpha & Omega.

John Newton, as he wrote the last two stanzas of his wonderful,
contemplative hymn that invites us “to rest in God” understood
that our Christian praise of Jesus will always be inadequate, until
that day in eternity, in the place we call heaven, we see Jesus face to face,
but until then, "I would thy love proclaim with every fleeting breath,
and may the music of thy name refresh my soul in death.
