I went for an easy 5km recovery run yesterday afternoon. It was around 5:00pm and the sun was shining brightly and the shadows and leaves were dancing in the breeze. There was a coolish breeze though, a sure sign and reminder we are on the last days of summer.
The route I chose for my easy recovery run, was along the Steve Bauer trail that begins on the Port Robinson Road, just across from Station Street. The first 1km is under a wonderful canopy of trees, and here and there one could see the red leaves of the Sumac bushes peeking through the green, another reminder we are in the last days of summer.
Next Monday, September 23rd, marks the first day of the Fall Season or Autumnal equinox. Here in Niagara, the "splendour" of Fall makes it my very favourite time of the year.
The dictionary defines the word "splendour" as brilliant or gorgeous in appearance and/or in colouring. Splendour can also mean magnificence. The dictionary also goes on to define splendour in several other ways: an instance of display of imposing pomp and grandeur and even glory, a bright brilliance, or to make splendid by decorating lavishly, and the final meaning ... to adorn - which my trusty Thesaurus here on my computer describes as "to beautify, grace, clothe." The trees have taken off their Summer dresses and put on their Autumn costumes in readiness for the great, once a year spectacular and sad event, when the leaves dance, as a great finale, to be carried away on the wings of the wind.
Any one of these words might well describe the Fall Season here in the Niagara region, which in its magnificent splendour, pomp and grandeur of its yearly show, that turns the green leaves of the trees, and simply and without fuss, adorns them with coats of bright red, deep yellows and distinctive browns, that in themselves speak of the great glory of God the Creator who is also the ultimate Artist. Enjoy the splendour of the coming Season.
We give you thanks and praise, O Lord, for all you do for us. We thank you for the splendour of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the blessings of family and friends, and for the loving care that surrounds us on every side. We thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his word and the example of his life. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
